Replacement Chillers at M&S Kensington store
PROJECT
The project included the replacement of two 15-year-old York Chillers, which had reached the end of their useful life. The Weatherite Air Conditioning Ltd team had to remove the existing chillers and build replacement water chillers which included an extensive amount of refrigeration work.
SOLUTION
Weatherite designed, manufactured and built two water chillers in situ in a small internal plantroom. There were a number of challenges in designing the new solution which required existing, obsolete technology to be replaced. Through legal ramifications and planning permission anything built on the roof was going to take a minimum of nine months to gain planning approval. M&S’s legal and contract costs would have doubled and it would have been impossible to meet lead times.
Instead of building on the roof externally, Weatherite designed a system that would transfer all the cooling kit internally into a plantroom in the store. This meant that they would significantly reduce logistical costs and they would meet stringent deadlines. Furthermore, they would have no legal costs, and even more importantly, not disrupt the store.
Building the water chillers on site in a small area took a huge amount of planning. The cooling equipment had to be transferred in pieces via a goods lift and every component had to be measured at Weatheirte before transporting onto site. Once the existing chillers had been dismantled, the existing framework was refurbished and modified to house the new air-cooled condenser coils and high efficiency EC Fans. Due to the very stringent noise constraints on-site, the condenser EC Fans were fitted with AXITops Diffusors for improved airflow and reduced noise levels. This all contributed to the new chillers having a much lower noise levels than the existing chillers without the need for attenuation to be refitted around the new chiller plant.
Weatherite also replaced the existing circulation pump with a twin head circulation pump to ensure resilience with the new installation allowing for some standby capability.
Weatherite Service & Maintenance is responsible for the upkeep of the equipment which legally has to be maintained every six months

WEATHERITE ALUMINIUM SOLUTIONS PROVIDES EXPRESS SERVICE
The design, manufacture and installation of a shopfront for a new Tesco Express in Hemel Hempstead – including curtain walling screens, automatic bi-parting entrance doors, entrance roller shutter and manual spring doors - is the latest project completed by Weatherite Aluminium Solutions for the retail giant.
Providing aesthetically pleasing shopfronts and facades is just the start of the story for Weatherite Aluminium Solutions: A smart appearance may attract customers, but it’s the functionality and maintenance of the shopfront that has most impact on the shopper’s experience. Reliable and efficient automatic doors not only help maintain a consistent temperature in the retail environment and help to reduce heating bills, but also helps put shoppers in a positive frame of mind. It’s all part of the attention to detail that helps Tesco deliver their core purpose to ‘serve Britain's shoppers a little better every day’.
“That’s why we say that our services don’t end with the completed installation – that’s where they really begin” explains Dan Male of Weatherite Aluminium Solutions. “The exciting part of the project may well be the design, manufacture and installation, but we understand the importance of providing existing and new customers with a fast, efficient and cost effective 24-hour emergency support service. A damaged entrance door, smashed window, a faulty security grille or jammed roller shutter can all lead to loss of income, disruption and possible injury. Our aim is always to repair or replace quickly and with minimal fuss or disruption to the client’s business.
WEATHERITE DELIVERS COOLING SOLUTION FOR FENWICK’S NEW BRACKNELL STORE
When Weatherite was asked to tender for the design and manufacture of AHU’s at the new Fenwick store in Bracknell, they proved their efficiency in more ways than one.
Weatherite not only used its newly developed 3D visualisation software to quickly design and specify the most efficient and cost-effective solution for the project – but the resulting Air Handling units delivered up to 76.5% efficiency – far surpassing the requirements of 2016 ErP legislation efficiency of 67% and the 2018 efficiency of 72%.
Fenwick is one of the UK’s oldest department store chains and the Bracknell store - the Company’s first new outlet in more than a decade – is one of the marquee openings in the major redevelopment of the Berkshire town.
Weatherite designed, built and delivered a total of six Air Handling Units – five of which featured thermal wheel units to provide optimum energy savings and reduced carbon emissions.
Working on the project with contractors Woodward & Co (Environmental) Ltd, which specialises in the design & installation of building services within the retail & leisure sectors, Weatherite had to be competitive on price, but the fact that their solution included thermal wheels emphasised Weatherite’s commitment to delivering even greater energy efficiency.
Andrew Dunning, Director of Woodward & Co (Environmental) Ltd, commented, “We approached Weatherite as we felt they could provide high quality units that satisfied the high spec demands of the project and having worked with Weatherite for many years felt they were the right choice for us.”
“Thermal wheels are no longer an expensive luxury – they are a necessity especially on applications like this one where there is a requirement to handle large air volumes meaning even higher efficiencies are required” explains Paul Ludlow, Key Account Executive of Weatherite, “the technology has been available for some time, but never has its importance been greater because of stringent building regulations and ever-tighter standards in building-services provision”.
Weatherite Air Conditioning Ltd is part of the £40m Weatherite Group, one of the UK’s leading HVAC and building organisations.
