Weatherite 'Wellcomed' to Hinxton Hall

A major programme involving the refurbishment and replacement of Air Handling Units (AHU's) at the Wellcome Trust’s Famous Hinxton Hall research, training and conference facility, has recently been completed by the Weatherite Group.

The Wellcome Trust is at the forefront of research into the human genome and through its subsidiary, Hinxton Hall Limited, provides world class facilities to the organisations based on the ‘Wellcome Trust Genome Campus’ and to the many visitors who use its facilities every year.

As part of the programme of works, it became necessary to refurbish a large number of AHU's in the Sulston and West Pavillion buildings and in addition, replace one AHU on West Pavillion block.

Fully Projected Managed Programme
At this point the FM team at Hinxton Hall called in Weatherite Building Services, who, acting on a main contractor basis, co-ordinated the complete programme, which was both extensive and demanding.  Working in conjunction with sister company Weatherite Manufacturing Limited, the air handling units were refurbished by a specialist engineering team; existing pipe work was modified to accept the new replacement coils; high efficiency fan motors were installed and a new electronic control system installed.  In addition, all air handling unit case work was upgraded to ensure the client’s demands for maximum energy efficiency were met.

Working through an intensive 8 week programme, Weatherite planned all works to ensure little disruption to the normal day to day operations of Hinxton Hall and particular care and attention was paid to research organisations using the facilities to ensure their work was not affected or compromised.

Commenting on the project, Martin Thomas, Sales Director, Weatherite Building Services said,

“The challenges posed by the works undertaken at Hinxton Hall could not be taken lightly, due to the nature of the research undertaken at this world class facility.  However, I’m delighted to say that Weatherite delivered on its commitments to the complete satisfaction of the client and we are delighted to have been involved with such a prestigious project.”

Trainee Teachers Warm to Weatherite

Students and staff at Enfield teaching college in London will be feeling much warmer this winter thanks to a new heating system installed by Weatherite Building Services (WBS).

Appointed as Project Managers by Briar Associates of Stourbridge, West Midlands, Weatherite assumed full responsibility for the supply and installation of a Burderus gas condensing boiler, two Grundfos circulation pumps plus a new flue system from the boiler house to the roof and all associated building and electrical work.

Reduced Costs
In addition to ensuring the indoor room temperature will be conducive to learning, the fuel efficient condensing boiler will reduce the college’s energy bill and contribute to its environmental credentials.

All work was carried out on time and within budget.

“Having worked with Weatherite Building Services previously we know that they are not only commercially competitive but also extremely reliable and their work is always carried out with minimal disruption to our clients daily routines,” comments William Sentenza of consultants, Briar Associates.

Weatherite Apprentices The Key To Weatherite's Future

West Bromwich based Weatherite Air Conditioning Ltd is continuing to reap the rewards of its long-held commitment to the modern apprenticeship scheme. The company, one of the UK leaders in the design and manufacture of heating, ventilation and air-conditioning equipment has recently taken on a further 10 apprentices and is reaping the rewards of their investment in the scheme with a steady flow of high achievers - many of whom choose to carry on with their education after their initial apprenticeship scheme is completed.

“Weatherite is proud of its Black Country origins and in addition to employing over 160 people at its site in West Bromwich, has taken a positive role in the local community for well over 40 years, so it seems a natural progression to develop relationships with local schools and colleges and to encourage pupils to pursue a career in engineering” explains Angela Barrett, Weatherite Group HR Manager.

“Many of the candidates we see are not seeking an academic future, preferring instead to learn ‘on the job’. The candidates we employ demonstrate that they have the right attitude and a willingness to learn and, as history has proven time and time again, we can help them become high achievers in an exciting and dynamic industry.”

Weatherite admits that its recruitment policy doesn't always find the perfect candidate, but is proud of the success rate of well over 85% of their apprentices finishing their training and gaining a qualification. And the story doesn’t end there – having got their apprenticeship, many choose to progress even further by enrolling on part-time courses, with Weatherite more than happy to sponsor and support them in their further studies.

Weatherite is keen to emphasise that an apprenticeship is not an end in itself, but a springboard to continuous advancement and a long term successful future for the apprentice and of course for Weatherite Air Conditioning Ltd.

Weatherite Racks up Another Data Centre Cooling Success

Leading secure managed IT service provider InTechnology plc. is so proud of its latest facility in Reading it even organises open days to show off its “Next Generation” energy efficient technology and equipment.

With 15,000 square feet of hosting space there is an awful lot of technology to keep cool, so maintaining the correct ambient temperatures is vital. That meant InTechnology’s main contractors and project managers Galliford Try Communications had to be confident that they selected the most reliable company in terms of equipment and service to install the building’s air conditioning system.

Galliford Try Communications chose Weatherite Building Services with whom they had collaborated on other blue-chip data centre projects: “We knew we were commissioning a proven solution from a reliable company with the right IT cooling credentials commented Jon Collins, Galliford’s Operations Manager.

Weatherite Building Services (WBS) was responsible for the installation and commissioning of 20 fresh air, direct free cooling, high energy efficient Air Handling Units (AHU), manufactured by sister company Weatherite Manufacturing Limited. The units were designed to deliver 50kW net cooling capacity (N+1) to cater for the IT rack equipment loads of 2.9-3.2Kw, maintaining an enclosed cold aisle operating temperature of 24 degrees C.

All units were supplied in down-flow configuration, constructed in four sections, for ease of site installation, sitting on purpose designed floor stands. Supply air was delivered via the common floor void for controlled air distribution via floor grilles into each row of rack modules.

The project included replacing the existing building windows with weatherproof louvres which, with rear AHU duct connections, enables the introduction of filtered cooling air, or via operation of control dampers exhaust of condenser air, for those rare occasions when the AHU internal refrigeration plant was required to operate in extreme ambient conditions.  Further window louvres were fitted for automatic control of room pressurisation, fire integrity and security to permit a uniform external view of this prestigious office building.

Weatherite also installed condensate drains complete with protective water detection tape.  These were connected to each AHU trend controller which also incorporated special software designed to meet the InTechnology’s requirement for remote BMS monitoring of all operating parameters.

Reliability and performance were critical, but Weatherite’s solution provided other significant benefits including impressive PUE and CO2 reductions and capital cost savings. The self- contained modular AHU’s did not need any external plant space, while the underfloor infrastructure services requirements were limited to a power cable and condensate drain which assisted in providing more space within the floor void for other IT power cable services and improved the airflow to cabinets.

Further mechanical services were provided by WBS including the air conditioning of the separate Battery room to maintain their effective operational lifespan and a supply/exhaust fan ventilation system within the Switchgear room as a cost effective solution to eliminate the effect of the UPS plant heat output.

The project formed part of InTechnology’s strategic expansion program to improve its hosting, data and IP telephony service to both its existing base of over 800 UK businesses and potential new clients.

WBS has over 25 years’ experience in delivering all aspects of data centre/comms room cooling solutions, offers its customers a complete one-stop-shop-solution-from a single, highly experienced source.

WBS is part of the £40m Weatherite Group, one of the UK’s leading HVAC and Building Services organisations.
