Using filtered outside air is a highly effective way of cooling a Data Centre and, within the UK, can be utilised for the majority of the year. By using direct free outside air, condensers, compressors etc. are not constantly operating, consuming large amounts of energy. Adoption of ASHRAE Data Centre standards has significantly reduced the need for mechanical cooling to a few hours, if at all, resulting in massive energy savings whilst also extending the expected lifespan of the cooling equipment. ASHRAE’s Data Centre Classes as shown on the chart opposite, together with the UK weather data chart, clearly demonstrate that by allowing the Data Centre to use the allowable parameters, direct outside air cooling can be utilised for the majority of the year. By raising the supply air temperature, the number of days where direct free cooling can be utilised increases. This is increasedeven further when an aisle containment system is incorporated (as demonstrated in the charts below.) Total RoomCoolingusing amixture of direct outside air and recirculated air By introducing varying proportions of filtered outside air, mixed with return air to supply the required air temperature into the Data Centre, extensive savings can bemade as compressor and condenser operating times are greatly reduced. Cold Aisle Containment Cooling The incorporation of cold aisle containment within the cooling process can improve Data Centre cooling efficiencies even further. Due to the conditioned air being contained within the aisle, there is little opportunity for the hot exhaust air to mix with the cold inlet air, and, as the outside air can be usedmore frequently, due to the higher supply temperatures, energy use is significantly reduced and system efficiency increased. Hot Aisle Containment Cooling Usually considered for newbuildData Centres, this solution may be difficult to implement in some retrofit applications.
